Harlem Arts Council (HAC) is pleased to announce its first annual HAC’s Juried Art Show coming later this year.

The show will be open to the public. This contest and exhibition is a fundraiser benefiting Harlem Arts Council, a non-profit organization, which offers classes, activities, and camps to children and adults in the community.

Since 2014, HAC has held photography & fine arts exhibitions as a platform for the local and regional community to show their skills and connect with each other.

All art must be original and completed within the last three (3) years. Artwork must be the original version, no copies accepted.

Artists must be 18 years or older.

Jury Fee: $25.00 (non-refundable)

Each fee will allow for three (3) pieces of art in each medium (2D and 3D), meaning one fee for three (3) paintings or three (3) sculptures but separate fees must be paid if entering in both mediums.

Art can be brought to the HAC personally or mailed. Email contact will be provided for transportation or mailing instructions.

AWARDS:

On October 10th, HAC’s Juried Art Show Awards Ceremony Reception will be held from 2 to 5 PM at which time the Awards will be presented. Artists, their guests and art patrons are invited to celebrate with food and drinks before handing out the awards.

AND the center is open from 11 AM for public viewing and voting to select “People’s Choice Award”—visitors to the center (from 11 AM until 1 PM) are encouraged to cast their votes to select one winner.


Best in Show: $300 Cash Prize + Announcements & Publication (on HAC website, FaceBook, Instegram and Podcast/Radio) + Ribbon

1st place in 2D Category: $100 Cash Prize + Ribbon + Announcement on HAC Page/FB.

1st place in 3D Category: $100 Cash Prize + Ribbon + Announcement on HAC Page/FB.

2nd, 3rd places and Honorable Mention, (in most categories) & People’s Choice Award—Ribbon.

General Guidelines:

1. Art work must be original (not the work of another artist) and produced 100% by the artist exhibitor.

2. Artist’s artwork must not be completed in a class, group work/class, or under an instructional or an instructor-lead program.

3. Artists must be 18 years or older. (Future shows will include youth artists.)

4. Any copies of artist’s work or other copyright infringements of Art or intellectual property will not be accepted.

5. Artist must be an Amateur; (meaning they make no more than 30% of their income as an artist in the media being exhibited.)

6. The on-line 2D & 3D application are two separate entries providing three-artwork submission per category. Artists cannot combine these two categories (2D & 3D) in one application. In doing so, the entry will be denied automatically.

7. Any 3D artwork created as a result of 3D printing will not be accepted.

8. Artwork must be original and completed within the last three (3) yrs.

9. Please indicate if the art piece(s) are for sale—to be sold during or after the event. (A 20% commission fee is applicable.)

10. A separate photo for each art piece is required for submission. A group picture of artworks is not acceptable. Registrants will be contacted via email about delivery of photographs.

11. The photo should be as clear, well lit and as accurate of the artwork as possible. It is important to know that acceptance is based on the representation of these pictures in which the qualification will be juried.

12. Although creativity and out-of-box imagination / inventiveness is encouraged, please keep in mind that this is a family-friendly center, exhibition and jury show. Please keep artwork PG.

13. All artists accepted into HAC’s Jury Show will be notified by email only.

14. Shipping, insurance and or delivery/pickup of the artworks are the artist’s responsibility. The acceptance email will provide time and date for those who wish to drop off their artworks to the center personally.

15. The decision of the Jury Panel, Judges and Awards are final and non-contestable.

16. HAC reserves the right to disqualify any entry deemed not acceptable. Entry fees are not refundable.


2D Guidelines (painting/drawing)

Categories and Requirements Entries:

Jury Fee: $25.00 (non-refundable)

Submissions open: Now until August 18th

Shipping deadline: September 19th at 5 PM.

Accepted artwork includes:

  • Abstract/Contemporary - Impressionistic Expression
  • Animal/Wildlife—An animal is the main focal pint of the painting
  • Floral—A botanical, specimen of a plant, flowers or tree must be the focal point of the painting.
  • Landscapes
  • Portraits—At least ¾ of profile of a face or better is required as the focal point of the painting.
  • Still Life
  • Waterscapes—Water must be the main focal point of the painting.
  • General Art—This is considered for any artwork that can’t be fitted into the above categories.

All must be drawn or painted in Oil, Acrylic, Pastels, Watercolor, Charcoal, Color Pencil, Pen & Ink, Mixed Media or other acceptable media. (Photos will not be acceptable for display.)

All can be drawn on: Canvas, Wood, Canvas Board, Paper, Fabric or any other acceptable base ready for wall display.

All artworks must be labeled in the back with the Artist’s name, email, phone number, category, work title, medium and notation as to whether the piece is available for sale. (Any missing information on the back of the piece will eliminate the artwork from the competition.)

All artworks that are painted on anything other than canvas must be framed under glass or Plexiglas for protection.

Artworks should not exceed total of 48”x48” (HxW), including frame or 30 lbs.

Any artwork that requires assembling will not be displayed unless the artist is able and present to arrange and assemble the artwork prior to the exhibition and pick up afterwards. HAC will not be responsible for assembly of the artwork.

NO SAWTOOTH HANGERS - All 2D artworks MUST have a secure hanging wire firmly attached to the back of the piece.

Shipping cost, insurance, delivery/pickup are responsibilities of the artist. The acceptance email will provide time and date for those who wish to drop off/pickup their artworks to the center personally.

All artists accepted into HAC’s Jury Art Show will be notified by email only.


3D Art & Sculpture Guidelines:

Jury Fee: $25 (non-refundable)

Shipping deadline: September 19th at 5 PM

HAC’s Jury Show accepts all 3D mediums such as metal, textile, pottery, wood, plastic, resin, glass, clay, paper, assemblage and any other 3D mediums. (Not 3D Printed, Please.)

All artworks must be labeled with the Artist’s name, email, phone #, category, work title, medium and notation as to whether the piece is available for sale. (Any missing information on the art piece will eliminate the artwork from the competition.)

All 3D free-standing artworks must have secure base to keep the piece in place safely.

Artworks should not exceed of 48”H x 40”W x 40”D in size.

Hanging 3D art pieces must not exceed 30 lbs.

NO SAWTOOTH HANGERS—All 3D artworks MUST have a secure hanging wire firmly attached to the back of the piece.

Any artwork that requires assembling will not be displayed unless the artist is able and present to arrange and assemble the artwork prior to the exhibition and pick up afterwards. HAC will not be responsible for assembly of the artwork.
